Redmond Washington is located at the northern end of Lake Sammamish and, thanks to Microsoft Corporation, Redmond has become one of the largest employment centers in what's referred to as "the Eastside" of Seattle. Redmond has 46,000 residents and 72,000 jobs; which are expected to grow approximately 40% and 30% respectively during the next two decades. Although Redmond has a huge high-tech employment base, over 40% of Redmond's are in the finance/insurance/real estate/services sector. Retail has also exploded with almost 8,000 retail jobs emerging just in 1999. Redmond's park system consists of 34 parks totaling over 1,350 acres and 25 miles of biking/hiking trails. Lake Sammamish is one of many for Redmond residents who can enjoy the lake from more than one of its waterfront parks. Snow skiing is only an hour east of Redmond. Many Redmond commuters enjoy having only a 15-mile commute from downtown Seattle. Two of Redmond's many communities include the Union Hill area east of Lake Sammamish which offers hundreds of homes on acreage, and Redmond Ridge, which has hundreds of new homes near the new Trilogy golf course. There are 48 schools within the Lake Washington School District, which serves over 150,000 residents in Redmond, Kirkland and a portion of the city of Sammamish. Scores on standardized tests place the School District in the State's top 10%.
